Exodus 9:16 (NKJV) But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.
If He raises you up it means YOU become His standard against the enemy to show His power.
Isaiah 59:19 (NKJV) So shall they fear The name of the Lord from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.
In the OT a standard was, when used literally, a flag or banner usually used by the military to identify groups of soldiers or a central flag to rally all the soldiers at one time (Num. 1:52; 2:2; 10:14, 18). In this scripture from Isaiah its used figuratively. The Hebrew word used for banner in Isaiah 59:19 means to dispel, to make that enemy run. What if as in Exodus 9:16 YOU are the thing He wants to use to make the enemy run? What if YOU are the banner He is raising up for a purpose or a time?
In the next chapter of Isaiah He shows us this.
Isaiah 60:1-2 (NKJV) Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.
It means He puts His spotlight on you. “Arise shine” means you will be seen by friend and foe alike. And the darker it is the more you will stand out. How can you change anyone if you are hiding? Is it no wonder the Word is in the shape it’s in when we have hidden our light out of fear? No where in His Word can we find that He wanted us to hide or play it safe.
The Lord warned us that it wouldn’t be easy.
John 15:18-20 (NKJV) “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.
Later on in John 17 the Lord gives us a clearer picture of the price for following Him. Here in Chapter 17 verses 15 through 18 He is talking to the Father about the disciples but it’s also about us.
John 17:15-18 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
Did you see that? He said, I do not pray that You should take them out of the world. Can you find anywhere in there that gives you the idea that He wanted you to play it safe and be a covert operative? No. It’s just the opposite. He sends us out to a lost and dying World. By praying for protection from the “evil one” we can see He expected us to be attacked for following Him and telling the World about Him. No instructions to hide behind walls or doors. There are no descriptions of secret agent Believers in the Bible. There are only examples of people who lived their faith out loud in the word and deed for everyone to see. Expect exposure and expect attacks. It goes with the territory!
In 2 Timothy the Apostle Paul is exhorting and encouraging young Timothy who is under severe attack, in this case, from other believers. No matter who the attack is from we should heed Paul’s words to Timothy.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NKJV) Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NLT) This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Paul is telling Timothy – it’s tough, I know it is. But don’t quit. Don’t get timid. Get fired up. Stir it up inside of you. It’s like a football player who gets fired up for a game or a fighter who uses motivation to get prepared for a fight. We are in a fight and when it gets really bad we need to reach deep inside and get the Fire of the Holy Spirit roaring. It’s a choice. Fan those flames and remember who your Abba Father is – He is the Great God above all gods. Remember that the One you believe in died on the Cross, rose from the grave and sits at the right hand of God far above ALL principality and power. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. That same Holy Spirit He sent to help us walk this walk will also give us His Power, His Love and His Mind.
Shalom & Blessings,
