New Year New Choices

540_293_resize_20130701_3b9dc09f8218f9325f956558fe990f4c_jpgThis is the time of year people are making New Year’s resolutions hoping that they will keep them but knowing that they probably won’t.

Sadly, this is a ritual many go through year after year and the outcome is always the same – failure.

Let’s make this year different.

Make is a new year of new choices for your life.

The word resolution means: 1. Process of resolving 2. Decision 3. Determination

Where are you in the process of the decision that will take determination to achieve?

Now, to the deeper question.

Where are you spiritually and what new choices do you need to make in this New Year?

Patient: Doctor doctor.  It hurts when I do this!

Doctor: Don’t do it!

In 25 plus years of ministry I have met countless people who want the pain or torment to go away but do not want to change the decisions that led to the pain and torment.

Many Believers in Jesus of Nazareth as Lord and Savior see Him and His grace as a license to sin.  They know He will forgive them so they keep doing what they did before and getting the same outcome.  Yes, He loves you just as you are but He also loves you too much to let you stay that way.

The Holy Spirit is given to inspire, encourage and convict us of sin.  He walks with us to show us the way and to remind of The Word.  When we willfully sin we wander away from Him and His guidance.  Eventually, if it goes on long enough, we are lost in the darkness and shadows of this world where the wolves dwell.  It is then that the Shepherd seeks us out and leads us home.  Correction regarding our choices is a part of His love and done with His grace.

woman-caught-in-adulteryThe woman caught in adultery in John 8 was offered love, grace and no condemnation.  But, she was also offered a directive –  “go and sin no more”.  In other words, stop doing what you are doing or make better choices.  The Lord finalizes this directive with His closing statement in verse 12 – “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

If we are claim to follow Him our lives must show it.  If we are walking in darkness it means we are no longer in the Light.  And, that means we are no longer following Him.

It’s a New Year I pray that you will make New Choices that will keep in out of the darkness and into His Light.

Hebrews 5:12-14 (NKJV)

Spiritual Immaturity
For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

This section of Hebrews 5 is entitled Spiritual Immaturity and that is what I want to rant about..I mean talk about.

Over the past few months I’ve been doing a Back to Basics Bible Study built around the Book of Acts.  As we’ve been dissecting each scripture and thought the undeniable pattern of Divine Instruction has revealed itself.

Isaiah 28:9-10 (NKJV)

9 “ Whom will he teach knowledge?
And whom will he make to understand the message?
just weaned from milk?
just drawn from the breasts?
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little.”

That pattern that has revealed itself in the New Testament is that you must bridge the Gospels and the Letters of the Apostles with the Book of Acts.  The Gospels underscore and explain the Book of Acts and the Letters of the Apostles to the church at large reveals the teaching of the Gospels in those events.  All three are intertwined in such a way that they cannot be taken out of context without diffusing its meaning and causing confusion in the reader.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 ( NKJV )
Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.     And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

And, without a knowledge and understanding of the Law and the Prophets (the Old Testament) we have limited insight into what the Lord was saying and what the NT Teachers were using as their framework for understanding.

The Bible is ONE BOOK of 66 Books acting as individual strands interwoven with the scarlet threat of salvation and redemption.  To not understand it in its entirety cheats the reader of the meat of the word.  To not know the events and historicity of the Book of Acts cheats you from the “who, what, where and why” of their writings.

It’s my belief that there are many who sit like little birds in a nest called a local church and eat the regurgitated Word chewed on by someone else.  They would rather sit there with their mouths agape and be fed then to feed themselves on the solid food of the Word.  Babies need pabulum and soft food.  That’s fine when you are a spiritual babe but after a while you should move on to solid food.  If your preachers and teachers are not encouraging you to chew on solid food of your own then they are deliberately making you dependent upon them.  They encourage your lack of spiritual maturity so that you will keep coming to them for “food”.

The Lord did not do that.  He challenged the thinking of His disciples and He pushed them out without Him almost immediately so that they could obtain experiential knowledge.  In today’s church you are told that you have to sit in a pew for years or a theological cemetery…I mean seminary…until all your thoughts are the thoughts they want you to have.  I am a strong  proponent of learning to be a leader by being a follower/doer but I also know that the model of the Lord and the Book of Acts was a church dependent upon the Holy Spirit to be their teacher and that by their ACTIONS they were confirmed into ministry.

1 Thessalonians 2:4-9 (NKJV)

4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. 5 For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness—God is witness. 6 Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. 7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. 9 For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.

By the way, before anyone gets too upset with the seminary comment, do you know the origin of the Christian Seminary concept?  It was born out of the effort to shut down the home churches and free move of the Spirit in 313 A.D. by the church leaders under Constantine.  Its intent was to control what was taught and who taught it.  Funny isn’t it how the church of the Lord exploded and expanded just fine without those controls in place.  There would seem to be a correlation with this man-made restraints and the subsequent replacement of the Book of Acts model with the Edict of Milan Model of large basilicas and cathedrals.  Not too long after this the influence of the church diminished and the Dark Ages began.

1 Thessalonians 5:19 (NKJV)

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

So, what is my point?  My point is that you have in front of you or on some dusty shelf or lamp stand a smorgasbord of the best that your Heavenly Father has for you to feed on.  There is a veritable Heavenly Banquet that will sustain you, strengthen you and mature you into effect, productive children being about your Father’s Business.

Feed on it.  Chew it.  Digest it.  Don’t rely on someone else to feed you but learn to feed yourself.  As I said bfore, if your preachers or teachers aren’t encouraging or inspiring that in you I suggest that you consider looking elsewhere.  We were not called to be dependent upon anyone but the One who is the Living Word of God.  The Holy Spirit was sent to remind you of the Lord’s words not the words of other men.

2 Timothy 2:15 ( NKJV )
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

However, if you are one of those people who are blissfully happy in your spiritual ignorance and would rather have different flavors of pabulum rather than real food continue on as you have.  That is totally your choice.  Just don’t complain when the time comes, and now is, when you are deceived and destroyed by the false teachers & teaching Peter warned us about in 2 Peter.

John 8:31-32 (NKJV)

The Truth Shall Make You Free
Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

If you want to live in Shacks sipping Chicken Soup for your soul coked by someone else and seeking out Secrets when the Truth has been given to you already that is again your choice.  I’d rather live in my Father’s House in His many mansions feasting on His “food” while having been set free by the Truth given to me by the One who wrote it!

Shalom & Blessings,
